Reflections on AI Art and Cooking

The experience of creating AI Art compared to the experience of cooking food
Image of a Cyberpunk digital art creator, generated using Stable Diffusion AI tool

So much is written about the current wave of AI tools such as ChatGPT for text generation and Stable Diffusion for image generation that it is hard to know what to add to this discussion. Thus I thought I would give a person account of my own last week plunge into the world of AI Art. What can you actually do? Are artists obsolete? Is there an actual talent involved in making AI Art or does the computer do all the work?

And if there is talent, skill and craftsmanship involved, then how exactly should that be characterized?

Writing a textual description of an image isn’t something you master right away. The image for this story was generate from the following description:

25yo Norwegian female as Cyberpunk AI art creator, short undercut blonde or red hair, nose piercings, eyebrow piercings, unshaven intricate high detail, dramatic, skin pores, very dark lighting, heavy shadows, detailed, vibrant, photo realistic, realistic, dramatic, dark, sharp focus, film grain, skin details, high detailed skin texture, 8k hdr, dslr, working at computer, Artificial intelligence, computer art images, visualizations, computer screen, side view, suntan

Not something a beginner can do right away. In some way it becomes almost a bit like programming.
